Eating a banana in the evening can have a positive effect on the body. However, there are also a few things to watch out for if you decide to enjoy some fruit before bed.

Eating a banana in the evening – that speaks for itself

Along with apples, bananas are among the healthiest fruits you can eat. This is because bananas provide a lot of magnesium and are rich in fiber and carbohydrates.

  • The magnesium contained in bananas relaxes your muscles. This ensures better regeneration and you feel more relaxed the next morning. Magnesium also prevents calf cramps. So if you suffer from these more often, it can be worth eating bananas regularly.
  • Bananas provide many amino acids, which, among other things, form the sleep hormone melatonin. This hormone is responsible for regulating your sleep rhythm. If you have trouble sleeping, then you have a lack of melatonin. So try whether you can sleep better with a banana before bed.
  • Bananas can also help prevent sleep apnea. Sleep apnea means that the airway in your throat becomes blocked or lax. This makes you snore loudly. Bananas contain phospholipids, which expand the throat and improve breathing.

That speaks against the evening banana pleasure

While bananas offer many benefits when eaten before bed, they also come with some downsides.

  • Eating fruit at night can make you fat. Because fruit contains fructose, and the body can no longer convert it into energy before going to sleep. The excess carbohydrates then remain in the liver, where they are processed into fat.
  • The fructose in bananas also makes it harder for you to fall asleep. Because fructose is a sugar, and sugar energizes and provides energy. Therefore, make sure that you generally do not eat any fruit before going to sleep. If you still feel like fruit, then berries, grapefruit or papaya are best – these only contain a small portion of sugar.
  • If you eat bananas in the evening, then the digestion has to start up again. Nevertheless, the fruit can be digested very poorly in the evening. It may get lodged in the colon. There it ferments, and causes a bloated stomach.
