Fipronil – that’s what’s behind it

  • If you have pets, know the chemical remedies for parasites like ticks, fleas, and lice. Many of these products contain the contact poison fipronil, which is also used in crop protection products.
  • Fipronil was developed 30 years ago by the French chemical company Rhône-Poulenc and the chemical has been in use since 1993. However, just a few years after fipronil was launched, the EU drastically restricted the use of toxic substances in agriculture. Among other things, the bee populations were massively damaged by the poison.
  • Fipronil has been the focus of interest again for a few days. Numerous eggs have been found commercially in which traces of the contact poison have been detected. According to the Federal Institute for Risk
  • Assessment, the value measured so far is not life-threatening, but you should still not eat the eggs.
  • In this case, the poison probably got into the eggs through a disinfectant that was illegally mixed with fipronil.
  • Fipronil can cause nausea and vomiting, and skin and eye irritation, among other things, in humans if accidentally ingested in food.
  • The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety lists the numbers of the affected batches of eggs on the food warning portal.
