Freeze Cream Cheese: Here’s How To Do It

You can freeze cream cheese to extend the shelf life of the food. This food tip tells you what you should consider when storing cream cheese in the freezer.

Freezing cream cheese – this is how it works

Like many other types of cheese, cream cheese can also be frozen.

  • However, you should be aware that the consistency of cream cheese changes when it freezes. After defrosting, it is no longer creamy but crumbles.
  • The easiest way to freeze a package of cream cheese is when it’s not already open. Then simply place the closed pack in the freezer.
  • If the cream cheese has already opened, pour it into a sealable and freezer-safe container to freeze cheese.
  • Be sure to note the freezing date on the jar. You can store cream cheese in the freezer for up to six months.

Thaw and use cream cheese

As already mentioned, the consistency of cream cheese changes when it freezes.

  • Cream cheese contains a lot of water. Ice crystals form from the water in the freezer. If this thaw again, the water does not combine with the cheese. The result is that the cheese crumbles.
  • Defrosted cream cheese is no longer suitable for a spread because it cannot be spread.
  • However, you can easily use cheese for cooking and baking.
  • Slowly thaw the cream cheese in the refrigerator. If you want it to go faster, you can also put the sealed freezing container in warm water.
  • Tip: Since deep-frozen cream cheese is mainly used for cooking, you can also freeze it in practical portions.
  • An ice cube tray, which you carefully cover with foil for the freezer compartment, is ideal for this.
  • Another tip: If you want the cream cheese to be a little creamier after defrosting, stir in a little milk or cream.
