With a little preparation, kale can be easily frozen and thus preserved. So you can enjoy healthy vegetables outside of the cold season, regardless of the season.
Freeze kale properly: That’s what matters
You can freeze both home-grown kale from your garden and fresh kale from the supermarket. Proceed as follows:
- Ideally, only freeze fresh kale if possible. The vegetables will keep in the freezer for up to a year.
You can recognize fresh kale by its lush green, crisp leaves. Older cabbages already have wilted and yellow or brown leaves. - Separate the individual kale leaves from the stalk and then wash them thoroughly with water. Be sure to remove any remaining soil or dirt.
- Next, briefly blanch the leaves. To do this, cook the kale in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 4 minutes. Then put the cabbage leaves in ice water to chill.
- Spread the individual sheets out on paper towels so they can dry well.
- Now you can cut the dried kale into strips of any size, or you can simply leave the leaves in one piece.
- Portion the prepared cabbage into freezer bags or plastic containers and place it in your freezer.
- This way, if you want to prepare dishes with kale, you always have the right amount on hand.
