Fruity Matjessalat

The perfect fruity matjessalat recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

For the salad:

  • 4 Pc. Herring fillet
  • Mineral water
  • 2 Pc. Eggs
  • 2 Pc. Apples
  • 4 Pc. Pickles

For the dressing:

  • 1 Cup Mayonnaise lightly
  • 300 g Mild yogurt
  • 2 tbsp Pickle brew
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 pinch Sugar
  • 1 pinch Cayenne pepper
  • 10 drops Worcester sauce
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • Chopped dill

Preparation:

  1. First rinse the matjes fillets and place them in a container with mineral water overnight! If you want it salty, you can omit or shorten this step!

Preparation:

  1. The next day, dab the herring fillets and cut into pieces approx. 1x2cm wide. Boil the eggs hard and cut into small pieces. Peel the apples and cut into small cubes. Also cut the pickles into small cubes. Put everything together in a bowl.
  2. Mix the mayonnaise, yoghurt and pickle stock together until smooth. Season with salt, pepper, sugar, cayenne pepper, Worcester sauce and lemon juice. Then pour over the salad ingredients and mix well. Let it steep for at least 3 hours!
  3. Then don’t forget to season to taste, depending on how long the matjes has been swimming in the mineral water, a pinch of salt or pepper could be missing, if you like it spicier.
  4. Sprinkle the dill on top before serving. Enjoy your meal!

Annotation:

  1. This salad goes well with a buffet! You can also enjoy it as a main course, e.g. together with jacket potatoes 🙂
