Germinate Wheat: Grow Your Own Sprouts and Wheatgrass

You can also germinate wheat at home. Results can be seen after just a few days and you can soon be using the sprouts for different dishes. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about this.

Germinating wheat: You need this

There are many different types of wheat. However, if you want to germinate sprouts, that makes no difference. Because the procedure and the tools are the same. And all you need for this:

  • Sprouting glass or a germinator
  • Water
  • Key
  • Sieve
  • Wheat grains, such as ancient wheat

How to prepare the wheat grains

Before you can grow wheat grains, you need to prepare them well. This reduces the risk of germs and mold forming.

  1. First, sterilize the germination jar by washing it with boiling hot water. Tip: if you don’t have a sprouting glass with you, you can also build a sprouting glass yourself.
  2. Place the wheat grains in a sieve. Rinse the grains well. This is important so that dirt and germs are washed out.
  3. Then put the wheat grains in a bowl. Fill this with water. The wheat grains now have to soak for 12 hours.

Let wheat grains germinate – that’s how it works

After 12 hours, the wheat grains are ready for further processing. Check again that no mold has formed in the glass and the grains are not smelly. If this is the case, you must discard the wheat grains to avoid poisoning. And so it continues:

  1. Place the wheat grains in the sprouting jar. Add water to float the grains and drain the water.
  2. Leave the jar for a day. Meanwhile, the wheat grains begin to sprout.
  3. The next day, fill the glass with water again and pour it out again. Leave the jar for another day.
  4. On the third day you can use the sprouts or let them sprout for another day. If you leave them for a day or two, wheatgrass will form, which you can use in the kitchen as well.

Wheat sprouts are so healthy

Wheat sprouts are good for your health. If you have grown wheat sprouts yourself, you can use them as a side dish or for salads and sandwiches, for example.

  • Wheat sprouts contain different tocopherols. Tocopherols are vitamin E, which is important for your skin and cells.
  • In addition, the grains contain gamma-aminobutyric acid, i.e. GABA, fiber, phenols and free amino acids.
  • Wheat sprouts also increase the absorption of the two minerals zinc and iron. Because many foods, such as green tea and whole grains, inhibit the absorption of the two minerals.
  • To benefit from the health-promoting power of the grains, add the wheat sprouts to muesli, yoghurt or a fresh salad, for example. Dry the wheat sprouts and process them into flour, then you can also add them to the flour when preparing baked goods.
  • Combine the wheat sprouts with broccoli sprouts, for example.
