Delicious, beginner-friendly barbecue skewers even for those on a tight budget
Soak 4 wooden skewers in water; if you’re using metal skewers, rub them with a little oil or lard. Cut the ham into 12 even pieces (fillet will work as an alternative, of course, it’s just a question of cost). Also cut the bacon into 12 pieces, as evenly sized as possible. Wash and trim the peppers and cut them into 16 even pieces. Peel the onion, halve them, then cut them lengthwise and crosswise, and remove the innermost part. First place a piece of pepper on the skewers (skin side out), then a piece of meat, a piece of onion, and a piece of bacon. Alternate this way, then add more peppers (skin side out). Cover the skewers and let them marinate in the refrigerator for a few hours. Remove them from the refrigerator 1 hour before grilling. Grill the skewers over direct heat for about 5 minutes, turning frequently, and let them marinate over indirect heat for another 6-8 minutes. We do not season the skewers. The onions, bacon, and paprika impart flavor to the meat. The roasted and smoky aromas add the finishing touches. A side of BBQ sauce, curry sauce, or tzatziki doesn’t hurt, either. We like to grill these skewers, but rarely on their own. Spanish potato skewers, corn on the cob, marinated chicken drumsticks, fresh bread and seasoned butter, homemade sauces, and a salad round out the whole experience. All perfectly suited for grilling beginners. For dessert, a slice of grilled pineapple or a piece of grilled melon will put your guests at ease.
