Grind poppy seeds – you should pay attention to that

Not only do flowering poppies look beautiful, but the seeds have also been used in the kitchen for hundreds of years. Before baking, however, comes the grinding of the poppy seeds.

  • Of course, you can also get ground poppy seeds from specialist retailers, but it is still worth grinding the poppy seeds yourself. Poppy seeds have a very high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, which is essential for our health.
  • While the fatty acids in poppy seeds are healthy and fat is known to be a good flavor enhancer, released fat quickly goes rancid. Therefore, the ground poppy seeds not only lose their health-promoting effect very quickly but the delicious nutty taste is also lost. So there are important reasons for not grinding the healthy poppy seeds until just before baking.
  • If you have ground too much poppy seed, you should pack it as airtight as possible and store it in a dark, cool room. Use the ground poppy seeds as soon as possible. You should not store the ground poppy seeds for longer than three to a maximum of four weeks unless you freeze them.
  • Note: As long as the poppy seeds are not yet ground, you can safely store them for up to a year.

The right course of action

Poppy seeds are small and hard, and for this reason alone they place a number of demands on the right grinder. In addition, the active ingredients and the fine taste of the poppy seeds should of course be preserved during grinding.

  • For the reasons mentioned above, a grain mill or even a coffee grinder is more of an emergency solution. Especially when grinding the poppy seeds in the coffee grinder, there is usually a significant loss of taste due to the heat generated. The grinding result of most grain mills is usually also rather suboptimal with the tiny grains of poppy seeds. To make matters worse, the coffee grinder in particular is difficult to clean from the grease that has escaped.
  • If you rarely use poppy seeds in the kitchen, you can use a mortar instead, which is great for crushing the delicate grains so that the oils are released. In addition, the mortar can be easily cleaned afterward.
  • With the mortar of the poppy seeds, you do something for your upper arm muscles, but if you regularly use a lot of poppy seeds in the kitchen, this process is a bit too tedious in the long run. In this case, a poppy seed mill is a good idea.
  • Poppy seed mills are specially designed for the small, hard grains of poppy seeds and are therefore the best way to grind them. The name is actually misleading, because the small grains are not ground in poppy seed mills, but crushed. This preserves the taste and nutrients.
  • Tip: When buying the poppy seed grinder, not only pay attention to the styling of the new household appliance but also that it is easy to clean.
