Grinding Coffee Without A Grinder: Here’s How

We introduce you to alternative kitchen appliances and methods that you can use to grind coffee without a grinder. This does not necessarily have to be a blender, a rolling pin and meat mallet are also suitable for grinding. So nothing stands in the way of coffee preparation.

Grind coffee without a grinder – you have these manual options

If your fully automatic coffee machine is broken and can no longer grind beans, desperation quickly sets in because your morning coffee is at stake. In an emergency, however, you can fall back on a few alternatives with which you can get the beans crushed manually:

  • Rolling Pin: Place the coffee beans in a freezer bag. If you don’t have one at hand, you can also place the beans between baking paper. Now place the coffee beans on a wooden board or other stable surface and apply pressure. This is how the coffee beans break. Repeat the process until you have reached the desired degree of grinding. You can then roll the rolling pin over the beans as well.
  • Meat mallet: Not only can you use a meat mallet to pound meat, but you can also crush coffee beans in an emergency. Again, place the beans in a freezer bag and on a wooden board. Be sure to let the air out before you start tapping.
  • Mortar and pestle: Mortars and pestles are also suitable for crushing coffee beans. However, you have to use a lot of force here. Put some beans in the mortar and crush them. Once you have crushed the first beans into powder, it will be a little easier afterward.

If you have a suitable electronic device, you can use it if you want to grind coffee beans and don’t have a coffee grinder.

  • Blender: If your blender is powerful, it is also suitable for grinding coffee beans. However, you will not get the powder quite as fine as with a coffee grinder. Ideally, you should then use it for your French Press. To do this, put the coffee beans in the blender and let them blend at the lowest level with short breaks in between.
  • Food processor: You can also use a food processor. Put the coffee beans in the machine and also chop them at intervals. Check the degree of grinding regularly from time to time. However, you will not achieve very fine powder for espresso with the food processor.
  • Blender: Take a tall, narrow bowl or blender jar and add a few coffee beans. Now puree the beans. What is practical about this variant is that you can determine the angle and the pressure on the beans yourself and thus achieve a more even result. Be sure to cover the top of the bowl with your hand to prevent coffee beans from flying out.
