Spread the love

You can easily grow broccoli sprouts yourself at home. You only need a few materials for this. In this guide we will explain how this works and everything you need to know about it.

Growing broccoli sprouts: the material

Broccoli sprouts contain valuable minerals such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc and iron. In addition, the sprouts are unbeatable when it comes to vitamins. They are rich in vitamins B1, B2, B6 and E. Broccoli sprouts also contain some phytochemicals that are considered effective in fighting cancer and diabetes. If you now want to grow your own broccoli sprouts for your health, you will need the following materials:

  • 1 Germination jar or germination tray
  • Filtered tap water
  • 2 Tablespoons broccoli seeds.

How to germinate the broccoli seeds

To prevent your broccoli seeds from shrinking and germs from forming in the jar, you should first sterilize the germination jar with hot water . This is important. In the worst case, there is a risk of severe poisoning if your broccoli seedlings are contaminated with germs. Also clean your hands thoroughly before you start.

  1. Place the seeds in the sprouting jar. Fill the cleaned glass halfway with water. Let them soak in the water for about eight hours.
  2. Tip the seed jar over and stand it at a 45 degree angle. Drain the water well.
  3. When the water has drained, put the glass back in the normal position. To keep your broccoli seeds thriving, add water to the jar twice a day and drain. If it is hot, you can also water the seedlings three times a day.
  4. Put the jar in a dark place. You can also just cover the jar with a kitchen towel if you like. This is particularly important in the first four days.
  5. Also, periodically loosen the seeds by shaking the jar.

Use broccoli sprouts: you have to pay attention to this

If the broccoli sprouts are large enough, you can use them in the kitchen. There are a few things to consider.

  • To keep your broccoli sprouts fresh, it is best to put them in a separate glass and put them in the fridge. Be sure to seal the jar airtight.
  • You can keep your sprouts fresh for a maximum of three to four days.
  • Let the sprouts grow a little longer, then green weed will form. You can eat that too. For this you need to let the broccoli sprouts grow for about seven days. Also, place them in the light on the 5th day so that the green cabbage can grow well.
  • If you like, you can then plant the seedlings in soil. Use the greens in salads.
