How to pronounce “gluten” correctly
Gluten is also called gluten protein and is found in the seeds of some cereals. Some people have an intolerance to gluten and should therefore avoid foods that contain gluten. However, many people are unsure about the pronunciation of the word. Do you stress gluten on the “E” (like ten) or the “U” (like sputum)?
- According to Duden, the usual stress of the word gluten is on the “E”. But the stress on the “U” is also allowed and therefore both are equally correct.
- The long “E” when pronouncing gluten comes from the fact that chemical compounds such as propene or ethylene are also stressed on the last syllable. Gluten counts as a chemical mixture of protein molecules, so a similar pronunciation suggests itself.ъ
- However, if you look at the origin of the word gluten, namely the Latin word for glue, the emphasis on “U” can be explained. Words translated from Latin into German often have their stress on the long vowel, for example, the words noun or volume.
