Originally from China, lychees are healthy because they contain a relatively large amount of vitamin C. In the human body, vitamin C is particularly important for the proper functioning of the immune system, for the formation of collagen, and for cell protection. Nowadays, large quantities of the fruit, also known as lychee, Chinese hazelnut, or lychee, are imported into Europe from Madagascar. They must be harvested when fully ripe so that they can develop their typical aromatic sweetness.
Lychees are characterized by their milky, sweet, and sour-tasting pulp, which is surrounded by a reddish-colored, scaly skin. Both the skin and the inedible core inside the pulp must be removed before eating.
100 grams of lychees contain:
- Vitamin C: 40 mg
- Folic acid: 25 µg
- Potassium: 190 mg
- Phosphorus: 35 mg
