Strawberries are highly sensitive fruits that cannot be stored for long. Even in the refrigerator, the delicious but very sensitive fruit will only keep for about a day or two before they start to spoil. However, by reducing potential sources of moisture, you can prevent the strawberries from becoming mushy or moldy during this time.
Ideally, fresh strawberries should be stored in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. Under no circumstances should strawberries be washed after purchase and then stored, the water does not make the fruit durable any longer, but only makes it more susceptible to mold spores and the like. They also lose their aroma. You should therefore only wash the strawberries and remove the stalk and leaves if the fruits are to be eaten or processed immediately afterward.
It is best to store the strawberries in a sieve in the fridge so that cool air can get to the fruit from all sides and any moisture residue can drain off. You can also put newspaper or paper towels in the crisper to prevent the strawberries from getting soggy from condensation. The paper absorbs the moisture and the strawberries have a longer shelf life.
