Strawberries – Benefits and Contraindications for Women, Men and Children

Glavred found out what are the benefits of strawberries and for whom they are dangerous. Strawberries are good for the heart, stomach, and immune system. The first strawberries ripen in May. Every day in June there are more and more of them on the shelves.

The smell of strawberries is the main indicator of their maturity. As nutritionists explain, if you don’t smell strawberries, you shouldn’t eat them.

Also, when choosing strawberries, look at the tails (they should not be dry and easy to tear off) and color (bright red, shiny, but not dark), the grains should be “sunk” inward. But the shape of the strawberries does not matter.

Strawberries – the calorie content

The calorie content of strawberries is only 33 kcal per 100 grams. Therefore, strawberries are very useful for dieting.

Strawberries – contraindications

Strawberries cause allergic reactions in people who are intolerant to calcium oxalate. Due to the high content of fruit acid, it is contraindicated for people with gastrointestinal problems. Also, strawberries are not recommended for hypertension, especially when taking enalapril-based drugs: they can increase the burden on the kidneys.

Strawberries are often sprayed with pesticides. Therefore, before eating them, you should pour boiling water over them in a colander. This will not affect the taste and health benefits of the berry.

What are the benefits of strawberries?

Strawberries contain not only many nutrients but are also one of the main sources of minerals. Strawberries contain

  • iron
  • potassium
  • silicon
  • magnesium,
  • manganese,
  • iodine,
  • calcium,
  • sodium,
  • zinc,
  • phosphorus,
  • copper.

Moreover, frozen strawberries do not lose their benefits, retaining almost the same vitamins and minerals as fresh ones.

Strawberries are useful for pregnant women – thanks to folic acid (which also helps with anemia), vision, and memory problems – their unique biochemical composition not only prevents the occurrence of such diseases but also contributes to the progressive treatment of existing ones.

Strawberries are included in the diet for cancer prevention (due to the high concentration of ellagic acid, vitamin C, kaempferol, anthocyanin, etc.), improving mood (it stimulates the release of serotonin), normalization of blood sugar levels (that’s why strawberries are useful for diabetes). They are also eaten to detoxify the body.

Strawberries are good for the heart: vitamin C and anthocyanidins protect arteries from damage, helping to prevent blood clots.

Vitamin C makes strawberries especially useful for the immune system. At the same time, it improves the digestion of starchy and protein foods, solving digestive problems. It is an excellent antipyretic and antibacterial agent.
