We love pumpkin in all possible variations. It’s just stupid when the pumpkin season is slowly coming to an end. But there’s no reason to despair: we’ll show you how easy it is to freeze pumpkin.
Freeze raw pumpkin
You can freeze nutmeg squash, spaghetti squash and more! Simply cut the pumpkin of your choice into small pieces. To make this easier to do, first cut it in half in the middle and cut off the ends.
Scoop out the flesh and seeds with a tablespoon. Peel the pumpkin with a knife and then cut it into small cubes. Finally, put the pieces in a freezer-safe container or in a freezer bag. Don’t forget to label it – and then put it in the freezer!
Not all types of pumpkin need to be peeled before eating. The shell of the Hokkaido , for example, can be eaten with confidence. It contains many nutrients. As a result, you don’t have to remove them before freezing either.
So make it easy on yourself and just wash the pumpkin under warm water. Then cut it in half and cut off the ends. Now remove the pulp and the pumpkin seeds. Then cut the pumpkin into small cubes.
Fill these into a freezer-safe container or freezer bag before putting them in the freezer.
Freeze pumpkin puree
In the event that you want to make a tasty pumpkin soup from your pumpkin sooner or later , it is a good idea to freeze it as a mush. To make the mush tender and creamy, first cut the pumpkin in the middle, hollow it out and cut it into small pieces.
Regardless of which type of pumpkin you use for the mousse, be sure to peel the pumpkin. This is the only way to ensure a creamy consistency for the mush and pieces are left out.
Now fill a saucepan with some water (2-3 cm from the bottom of the pot), add the pumpkin pieces and let them stew for about 20 minutes. The pumpkin should be nice and soft afterwards. It is now easy to process the pumpkin pieces into a fine mush with a hand blender.
Before transferring it to a freezer-safe container and putting it in the freezer, you should let it cool down for a while.
Tip: Vary the portion size of the bottled pumpkin puree. You can also spontaneously defrost a few cans or bags for yourself – or for a large number of guests – and conjure up a delicious pumpkin soup. Made from fresh pumpkin, of course. Bon Appetit!
How long can you freeze pumpkin?
Frozen squash, in any form, will keep for about 3-4 months. You can often use it while it is already frozen: if you want to cook it, for example, or use it to make chips in the oven , you don’t necessarily have to defrost it beforehand.
It is different with the mus. This should at least be thawed to the extent that it slips out of the can or bag into the pot without any problems.
As with other foods, the same applies here: trust your nose. If the pumpkin smells musty, it’s better to throw it away right away.
