Ice Cubes Are White at The Core: Why is That?

Why are ice cubes white at the core?

Especially in summer, ice cubes are a perfect refreshment for many people. If you look closely, however, you’ll notice that the small blocks are never completely transparent, but why is that?

  • In its natural state, water is always enriched with oxygen and other gases.
  • The white core in the ice cube is small air bubbles that disturb the crystalline structure of the frozen water.
  • If you place an ice cube tray filled with water in the freezer compartment, the water will start to freeze on the surface first.
  • In order for the frozen water to take on its crystalline, translucent structure, the air it contains is pressed downwards.
  • Gradually, the sides of the ice cubes also freeze and the air collects in the core.
  • Here it can no longer avoid it and therefore disturbs the crystalline structure of the ice. This makes the frozen water appear white.

How do you make clear ice cubes?

With a simple trick you can make transparent ice cubes without a white core:

  • If you boil the water first, the air trapped in it escapes.
  • Allow the water to cool and then pour it into the ice cube mold.
  • After a few hours in the freezer, you can marvel at completely clear ice cubes.
