Italian croutons

Spread the love

Ingredients for 16 servings:

  • 8 slices of toast, crust removed if necessary
  • 15 g Parmesan, grated
  • 75 g butter, or 80 ml olive oil
  • ½ clove(s) garlic, coarsely chopped
  • 1 pinch(s) oregano, dried
  • Parsley, finely chopped

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Rest time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 1 hour 15 minutes

Preheat oven to 120 degrees Celsius. Cut the stacked slices of toast into 1.5 cm cubes. Melt the butter, remove from the heat, and add the garlic. Alternatively, gently heat the oil and add the garlic. Let it stand for ten minutes. Strain off any fat and discard the garlic. Drizzle a baking sheet (with sides) with the fat and place the bread cubes on it, toss to coat, and spread out. Sprinkle with the cheese and herbs, mix everything together again, and spread out. Bake the croutons for 25-40 minutes, until dry and dark golden brown. Let cool before using. We like to eat the croutons on a salad.
