Original, drunk in Portugal on a sailing ship

Wash the 4 limes, cut them into eighths, and divide them among 8 sturdy whiskey glasses. Dust with sugar and muddle everything vigorously with a muddler. Combine all the liquids in a pitcher, divide evenly among the glasses, fill with ice, and stir briefly. Tip: You can also cut the limes a little smaller and muddle them with the sugar in the pitcher, then serve everything evenly in cocktail glasses. Depending on your taste, you can use a little more or less Amaretto or lime juice.
