Linzer Torte – a Recipe for the Classic Dessert

A classic recipe for a Linzer cake belongs in every Christmas bakery. You have already put together the ingredients in a few minutes and can start with the preparations. In this article, we explain how you can make a Linzer Torte.

Recipe for a Linzer Torte – required ingredients

For a Linzer Torte, you need ingredients for both the dough and the filling. If you bake often, chances are you have all the ingredients at home.

  • For the dough: 300 g flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 120 g sugar, 2 eggs, 100 g ground hazelnuts or ground almonds, 1 pinch salt, ½ tsp cinnamon, 1 pinch cardamom, 1 pinch clove, 170 g butter, 1 tbsp.
  • For the filling: 250 g raspberry-apricot or blackcurrant jam

Prepare the dough – this is how you do it

First, put the flour in a bowl along with the salt and baking powder. Mix well. Then proceed as follows:

  1. Add the sugar, ground nuts, and spices to the flour.
  2. Separate an egg. Set the yolk aside.
  3. Cut the butter into small pieces and add them to the dough. Add the egg white and a whole egg to the dough in the same way.
  4. Knead the dough until you get an even mass. Form the dough into a ball.
  5. Wrap it in cling film and put the dough for your Linzer Torte in the fridge for half an hour.

After the cooling time, the cake is baked

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a springform pan.

  1. Place half of the dough on a floured work surface. Roll that out. Cut the rolled-out dough into strips about 2 cm wide.
  2. From the bottom of your Linzer Torte from the remaining dough by pressing the dough into the cake tin.
  3. Also, form a border two centimeters high.
  4. Spread the cake base with the jam.
  5. Now cover the cake with the strips of dough so that a grid is formed.
  6. Mix the reserved egg yolk with the milk. Spread it over your Linzer Torte.
  7. Place the cake in the oven for 25 minutes. Then let them cool on a wire rack.
