The concept is reminiscent of spice mills, although there are both manually and electrically operated versions. If you want to make crushed ice yourself without a machine, wrap ice cubes in a tea towel or put them in a sturdy plastic bag. Then pound on it with a hammer, rolling pin, or meat mallet until the contents have the desired consistency. Most of the time you will make your own crushed ice without a mold. Chances are, you make your own crushed ice to use in a refreshing, delicious drink afterward. After all, various cocktail recipes call for fine ice crystals. Exactly how much you need depends on the variant. Just don’t use too much, crushed ice will quickly water down the cocktail. That’s why it’s often used for stronger drinks like mai tais or zombies. For our Caipiroska, for example, take four handfuls of crushed ice with 16 cl vodka and lime juice from a total of 4 limes, which you crush lightly. With our lemon squash recipe, on the other hand, you need 600 ml of water and four lemons, to which you add 600 g of crushed ice. Add ginger, thyme, and honey. Since its surface is larger than that of individual cubes, crushed ice cools much more efficiently. Accordingly, you can also use it to transport groceries. Or you put it in a large container and cool champagne or wine bottles in this way.
