Make Orange Peel Yourself: This is How it Works

Make an orange peel yourself: you need that

You hardly need any ingredients to make orange peel yourself.

  • Fresh organic oranges are the most important for the preparation of orange peel. You need four of them.
  • They have to be untreated because you need the peel of the oranges to make the orange peel and it shouldn’t contain any harmful substances.
  • Otherwise, all you have to do is provide sugar to make your orange peel yourself. And off you go.

Homemade orange peel: this is how it works

The baking ingredient made from citrus fruit, which is often used especially during the Christmas season, is prepared as follows:

  • Remove the peel from the flesh of the four organic oranges and cut the orange peel into small pieces.
  • Place the shells in a saucepan, cover with water and bring to a boil. The orange peels should simmer in the water for about three minutes.
  • Now pour off the water and repeat the process twice. This process helps extract the bitterness from the peel.
  • Take the shells out of the water and let them drain. Now weigh them and return them to the saucepan with the same amount of sugar.
  • Fill the pot with 100 ml water and let the sugar-orange peel mixture simmer for about an hour.
  • Then take the shells out of the pot, preferably with a slotted spoon, and place them on a baking rack. This is previously lined with parchment paper.
  • Place the orange peels on the baking grid in the oven at 60 °C for two hours.
  • Remove the baking rack from time to time and turn the shells over so that they can dry evenly. Allow the orange peels to cool in the oven after drying.
  • You can then cut the peel into small pieces and fill the finished orange peel with a little sugar in screw-top jars. It is best to keep the homemade orange peel in the fridge.
