Make Sunflower Oil Yourself: Here’s How

Making sunflower oil yourself is not worth it for financial reasons. But your own oil has the advantage of being rich in nutrients and flavorful – without any unwanted additives. There are several options for production.

Make sunflower oil yourself with an electric oil press

Sunflower oil is a popular and commonly used cooking oil. If you make it yourself, it retains its characteristic taste and valuable nutrients. This works quickly and easily with an electric oil press:

  • You will need : 2 kilograms of organic sunflower seeds and an electric oil press. This makes about 400 milliliters of oil.
  • The sunflower seeds used should be shelled and slightly moist. A moisture content of between 8 and 10 percent is ideal. It can be balanced with a little water or roasting in the oven.
  • Now put the sunflower seeds in the input compartment of the oil press. Then select the cold press.
  • Depending on the device, the process takes one to two hours per kilogram. So you have to bring a little patience.
  • Once the pressing is complete, pour the oil into a light-protected glass bottle.
  • The remains of the squeezed sunflower seeds can be processed further if desired, for example roasted as a snack or for baking bread .

Press sunflower oil with an oil mill

The procedure with an oil mill takes a little longer because it is hand-operated.

  • You will need : 2 kilograms of organic sunflower seeds and an oil mill. This also results in about 400 milliliters.
  • Pressing is easier with peeled kernels, but it is not absolutely necessary. But the moisture content is also important here. It should be around 8 percent.
  • First grease the moving parts of the grinder and place them on a firm surface. Heat the grinder with a spirit or kerosene flame to avoid deposits. In the manufacturing process of cold-pressed oil, 100 degrees Celsius must not be exceeded.
  • Now fill the sunflower seeds in portions into the opening and crank slowly. Turn until oil drips from the grinder.

Making oil without tools?

Another process of making oil yourself is distillation.

  • However, this is only suitable for herbs or the like to produce essential oils.
  • You need tools to squeeze out seeds.
