If you would like to serve a mango in an original way, the so-called mango hedgehog is suitable. In this article, you can read what it is all about, how to prepare it and what alternative options there are for slicing a mango.
Cutting mango hedgehogs: That’s how it works
Whether buffet for guests, breakfast with the family, or as a snack for the children – the mango hedgehog is a real eye-catcher. In addition, it is very easy to prepare. We have summarized a step-by-step guide for you:
- Wash mango: First of all, it is important that you wash the mango thoroughly with water.
- Two cuts along the core: The core should then be removed. This is very flat in the mango compared to other fruits. Therefore, make two vertical cuts along the pit in the mango – ideally, the cuts should be as close as possible to the pit. The middle piece contains the core – we continue with the two outer halves.
- Dice without cutting through the skin: These two outer pieces should now be diced. To do this, cut vertical and horizontal slices into the mango. But be careful: you must not cut through the peel of the mango – this is urgently needed for the further process.
- Turn the mango inside out: now the mango becomes a hedgehog! Turn the two halves inside out. To do this, press carefully on the shell so that the dice – or the tips of the hedgehog – are pointing upwards. Voila! The mango hedgehog is ready!
- Use leftovers: In the last step, you should make sure to use the leftovers. The middle part, created in the second step, has fruit pulp at the top and bottom that can be eaten!
Serve mango: There are these options
In addition to the hedgehog method, there are other ways to serve or eat a mango. We have listed the alternatives that are available for you here:
- Mango in fine slices: For this, the mango must first be peeled. Then – as in step two of the mango hedgehog – two cuts are made along the core. The two outer pieces can now be cut into thin slices.
- The corn on the cob method: This method is probably rather unconventional, but still very functional. To do this, the mango must first be washed and peeled. You can then impale the fruit on a corn cob holder. If you are particularly hungry, you now have the option of eating the mango like a corn cob.
- Alternatively, you can use the corn cob holder to cut off the flesh of the mango around the pit. The corn cob holder serves as a kind of holder during cutting and makes it easier to cut out the pit.
- Diced Mango: This is good if you want to make a fruit salad. To cut the mango into cubes, you can follow the instructions for the mango hedgehog. The final step is to separate the skin from the flesh.
