Maple Syrup: All About Shelf Life and Storage

With its delicious taste and long shelf life, maple syrup is a healthier alternative to sugar. We explain what you should know about the shelf life and storage of the aromatic syrup.

Shelf life of maple syrup

The high sugar content preserves the maple syrup and ensures a long shelf life. However, there is a clear difference in shelf life between opened and unopened syrup.

  • Airtight bottled maple syrup can be kept almost indefinitely – but at least the sweet syrup will last for a few years.
  • Once you open the maple syrup, the shelf life is significantly reduced. You can still enjoy the delicious sugar substitute for a few weeks without worrying.
  • Extend the shelf life of the maple syrup by keeping the rim of the jar as clean as possible after opening. This avoids possible mold formation.
  • Clean the lid and rim of the jar regularly with a clean cloth and scoop out the maple syrup with a cleaned spoon.

This is how you should store maple syrup

With proper storage, you can enjoy maple syrup for a long time.

  • Choose a place that is as dry, cool and protected from light as possible for storing the maple syrup.
  • Once the bottle has been opened, the best way to avoid mold growth is to store the syrup in the refrigerator.
  • Storage in the freezer is also possible: if you only use small amounts at the moment, you can extend the shelf life of the syrup in this way.
  • Place the maple syrup in an airtight container to freeze.
  • Please note when freezing: Although you can store maple syrup that has already been opened in the freezer, the syrup should not have been in the refrigerator for several weeks beforehand. In this case, do not freeze and rather enjoy the sweet syrup straight away.
