Greek Vasilópitta

This recipe comes from my mother-in-law and her mother. It’s delicious and can also be eaten as a cake. Cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and slowly add the eggs. Then add all the ingredients gradually, followed by the flour, mixing well. Bake for about 10-15 minutes. Then bake in a round, buttered and floured pan for about 45 minutes at 180-200 degrees Celsius. Do the toothpick test! You can also cut out shapes and place them on the cake, then sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Or sprinkle them with powdered sugar and write the year on them in chocolate. After baking, a coin is placed inside the cake. The cake is usually cut after midnight, on New Year’s Day. The first piece is for the house, then a piece for everyone. Before cutting the piece, the person it’s for is named and then cut. Whoever finds the coin receives a lucky charm and is said to have good luck for the entire year. A bottle of sparkling wine is opened for this purpose.
