Not Only Fruits And Vegetables: These Foods Also Contain Vitamin C

Lemons, peppers, broccoli: These products are known for their high vitamin C content. But the precious nutrient is not only found in fresh fruit and vegetables. Find out here which foods also contain vitamin C.

That is why vitamin C is important

Whether skin, teeth, bones, immune or nervous system: Vitamin C contributes to the normal functioning of a number of different organs and processes in your body. The vitamin also helps protect cells from oxidative stress and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue. With such versatile effects, it is definitely advisable to integrate vitamin C into your diet.

Good to know: Although the nutrient contributes to the normal functioning of your immune system, consuming foods containing vitamin C, such as oranges and lemons, as a precautionary measure will neither prevent nor shorten colds. Unfortunately, even the precautionary intake of vitamin C-containing food supplements does not protect against colds. This health myth persisted for years but was disproved. If you get caught, teas can relieve the symptoms of a cold.

Less known vitamin C suppliers

Every child probably learns that citrus fruits and apples contain vitamin C. However, there are still some vegetables that are also rich in nutrients, such as kohlrabi and spinach. 150 g kohlrabi or 200 g spinach can already cover the daily vitamin C requirement of an adult (95 mg).

But if you didn’t get around to buying fresh fruit and vegetables over the weekend, there are other ways to spice up your diet with foods containing vitamin C: Simply sprinkle a handful of fresh basil over your delicious pasta dish. The herb is rich in vitamin C, so its consumption prevents a deficiency. The same applies to other herbs. Wild garlic and dill are rich in vitamin C when fresh, and tarragon when dried. So you see, even if you’re not a fan of fruit salad, you can get a good dose of the nutrient with a dip made from curd and herbs.

Even meat lovers can eat vitamin C-rich foods without a glass of lemon juice in the morning, for example with a sandwich with chicken mortadella. Like Jagdwurst and veal meatloaf, this type of sausage is rich in vitamin C. Cabanossi, Bockwurst, and cooked Debreziner also contain the nutrient. Grab it and start snacking, your immune system will thank you!

Another unknown food with a high vitamin C content is camu camu. Find out more about the tropical superfruit here.
