Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and associated memory problems. A scientific study from Sweden showed that the memory performance of the forty test subjects improved as the cardiovascular risk decreased.
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce cardiovascular risk
Omega-3 fatty acids are of various importance for the health of the human organism. It is already known that they reduce the risk of various diseases, especially in the cardiovascular and metabolic areas.
For example, regular intake of sufficient omega-3 fatty acids prevents a heart attack.
Diseases of the cardiovascular system or metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes can be associated with a decrease in brain performance.
Anne Nilsson and her colleagues at Lunds Universitet in Sweden, therefore, examined the effects of dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids on the cardiovascular system, brain performance, and memory in a study involving 40 participants aged 51 to 72.
Boost memory with omega-3 fatty acids
For five weeks, the participants took a daily dietary supplement of three grams of omega-3 fatty acids.
Their cardiovascular risk was then examined. The researchers checked the blood fat and blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and inflammation levels of the test subjects. It was found that the omega-3 fatty acids reduced all of these risk factors.
Participants who took omega-3 supplements also performed better on the memory test.
A placebo, on the other hand, could not achieve improvements in any of the areas mentioned.
The researchers were able to establish a connection between the state of cardiovascular health and memory performance. The omega-3 fatty acids had a positive influence on both.
Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids makes sense
In addition to high-fat sea fish, cold-pressed vegetable oils such as hemp oil, linseed oil, or walnut oil also contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
However, since plant-based omega-3 fatty acids first have to be converted into the required long-chain omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA in the body and this conversion rate can also be very low, appropriate food supplements are very useful here.
One of the highest-quality omega-3 fatty acid preparations is krill oil with its particularly easily tolerated and optimally absorbable omega-3 fatty acids.
In the meantime, purely plant-based products are also on the market, e.g. B. the DHA algae oil, which is also very suitable for vegans to supply long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
