This is how onion juice with honey works against coughs

One of the most common side effects of a cold is a cough. Fortunately, there is an effective home remedy: onion juice with honey. A study from 2003 also shows that both onions and honey are effective against various bacteria . But how does the home remedy work?

  • The homemade cough syrup has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect, since onions contain essential oils as well as flavonoids and allicin.
  • Onion juice fights bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also reduces the swelling of the mucous membranes in the nose and throat.
  • Onion juice owes its good protection against colds primarily to its high vitamin C content.
  • Honey can act against pathogens and inflammation.
  • Honey settles on the stressed mucous membranes and thus relieves the urge to cough.

Making the home remedy is so easy

The preparation of the home remedy is simple and only two ingredients are required. You can find the steps here.

  1. First, a finely chopped onion is needed to make the syrup. Red or white onions are best.
  2. The finely chopped onion is then placed in a glass and 2 tablespoons of honey are poured over it. Alternatively, with a vegan honey substitute or with sugar.
  3. The whole thing is best left to stand overnight. The sugar draws the liquid from the onions and creates a syrup.
  4. Now all you have to do is pour off the liquid and the cough syrup is ready to use. A teaspoon can be taken several times on the dough.
  5. The cough syrup will keep for a few weeks and is best stored in the refrigerator.
