Orange Juice Causes Diarrhea: That’s The Prejudice

Orange juice causes diarrhea – just a misconception

Orange juice consumed in normal amounts hardly causes diarrhea.

  • The juice stimulates digestion. The bitter substance naringenin contained in the fruit is partly responsible for this.
  • If you drink a lot of it, this can lead to overly stimulated digestion and thus to diarrhea.
  • However, you should avoid orange juice if you have fructose intolerance. Fruit juices generally contain more fructose than the fruit itself.
  • Incidentally, orange juice is even recommended for diarrhea. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a special drinking solution for this. See the next paragraph for a recipe.

Make a drinking solution for diarrhea – this is how it works

In the event of diarrhea, the fluid and electrolyte loss must be compensated. This is possible with the following drinking solution.

  • Mix eight level teaspoons of sugar with three-quarters of a teaspoon of salt.
  • There is also half a liter of orange juice and mineral water.
  • Mix these ingredients well and drink the solution. In this way, you provide your body with sufficient liquid and minerals in case of diarrhea.
  • A drinking quantity of 40 ml per kilogram of body weight within 24 hours is recommended.
