Oversalted Food – These Tricks Will Help

Too much salt in food – first aid measures

It happens all of a sudden: you want to enhance your food with a bit of salt and the contents of your complete salt shaker spill over the soup or your schnitzel. Act fast.

  • First, try to remove the visible and excess salt from your food with a spoon or by tapping. For soups, be careful not to make quick movements, which will spread the salt even more. You can simply put French fries or the like in a sieve and tap them off.
  • Save your food with a spoonful of honey. This will make your food sweeter again and the salty taste will disappear. Especially in soups and salads, this works just as you want it to. If the honey is too sweet, a squeeze of lemon juice will help.
  • Take other foods that bind the salt in your food. These include potatoes, prunes, carrots, and bread. Just add large chunks when cooking and remove them before serving.

This also helps if the food is too salty

If you have too much salt in your food and don’t want to or can’t use the above tricks (for example, if you don’t have the listed foods on hand), then cook another portion – without salt. This reduces the salt content of the food and your guests can look forward to an even larger main course.
