Peppers Black Inside: Still Edible or Not?

Spread the love

If you have a pepper that is black on the inside, it does not mean that it is no longer edible. The reason for the black areas can be the color change of the fruit.

Peppers black inside: Check the fruit for mushy spots

If you cut open your peppers and discover black spots inside, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

  • Black spots in the peppers can be a buildup of colored particles. This means that if you have green pepper, it may continue to ripen and slowly turn red, orange, or yellow.
  • If you want to be sure that the peppers are still edible, you should check them for mushy spots. These are usually a sign that the fruit is bad.
  • If the muddy spots are only on the outside, you can simply cut them away generously. If the rotten, brown spots also appear on the inside, you should dispose of the peppers, as invisible mold spores may already have formed.
  • The skin of the peppers can also tell you how long it will last. If the skin is taut and normal, you can still eat the peppers.
  • Fresh peppers usually last up to two weeks. Store peppers in a dark, cool room to make them last as long as possible.
