optionally vegetarian, for approx. 20 pieces
Dissolve the butter in lukewarm milk and let it cool to lukewarm. Mix the dry dough ingredients well, add the milk mixture, and use the dough hook of a hand mixer to knead into a smooth yeast dough. Dust the dough lightly with flour, cover the bowl with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until it has roughly doubled in size. Divide the dough into 20 portions. Stretch one portion of dough slightly in the palm of your hand, add a cube of cheese, wrap the dough around it, and roll into a ball. Place the balls in a well-greased pan, leaving some space between them, and let it rise briefly again. Brush with milk and, if desired, sprinkle with diced ham, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C (top and bottom heat) for about 20 minutes. Serve hot. Every oven bakes differently, so the baking time may vary.
