Recognize Bad Coconut – Here’s How

Recognizing bad coconut is not easy

From the outside, you can’t tell if the coconut is fresh or has been in the supermarket too long.

  • The hallmark of a fresh coconut is a lot of liquid inside the hard shell. The older a fruit is, the drier it’s inside.
  • One way to test this is the shake test: shake a coconut, it should sound full.
  • If you hear a lot of liquid gurgling inside, this is usually a sign of the freshness of the coconut. Unfortunately, that is not a guarantee.

You will only recognize a bad coconut after opening it

A lot of liquid is an indication that the coconut is not old.

  • However, you can only determine the freshness with certainty by opening the fruit.
  • If the inside smells rancid, the coconut is bad, even if there is a lot of liquid lefts.
  • If the coconut water tastes soapy, you should discard the fruit as well. Then it is bad and no longer suitable for consumption.
  • In our next post, we will show you how to make coconut butter and coconut milk yourself.
