Red Wine Syrup
The perfect red wine syrup recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.
- 600 g Sugar
- 45 ml Water
- 300 ml Dry red wine
- 0,5 Organic lemon
- 0,5 Organic orange peel
- 0,5 pole Cinnamon
- 1 Star anise
- Heat 1,100 g sugar and 45 ml water in a higher pot. When the mixture forms bubbles, reduce the heat 2/3 and slowly reduce to a golden yellow caramel. The liquid initially evaporates again, it becomes white and crumbly and then begins to caramelize. Do not stir too much while doing this.
- In the meantime, bring the wine to the boil and then stir it into the golden yellow caramel. To do this, briefly remove the pot from the heat and be careful when pouring in. It foams a lot. When it has calmed down, pull the pot back on the stove and stir in the remaining sugar. Halve the washed lemon half once more and add to the wine-sugar solution together with the peel of the orange and the spices. Let everything simmer gently for 45 minutes on a low heat and stir every now and then.
- When the time is up, pour the syrup through a sieve into glasses. Stored in the refrigerator it gets its typical, chewy consistency. However, it is advisable to take it out some time beforehand for use. It can then be processed better. However, storing them in the refrigerator is not mandatory.
- The orange peel and spices give it a very light mulled wine note. If you don’t like that, you can leave both out. The amount of ingredients mentioned above resulted in 1.5 screw jars.
