Shelf Life of a Watermelon: Information and Tips for Extending It

How long do watermelons keep?

  • How long watermelons can be kept depends, among other things, on whether the fruit is still whole or has already been cut. You can safely store whole watermelons at room temperature for a week or two. You should cover cut fruit with cling film so that they do not dry out and eat them after two days at the latest. However, it is much better to store them in the refrigerator.
  • Watermelons keep much longer in the refrigerator: If they have not yet been cut, you can usually keep the fruit for up to three weeks. You should wrap cut melons in cling film so that they do not absorb the smell of the refrigerator or dry out. Consume these within a few days.

Extend the shelf life of watermelons

  • You will certainly have the least effort if you store the melon in a cool place – as already described above. This not only preserves the taste, but also many vitamins.
  • In Russia, it is a custom to eat watermelons on New Year’s Eve. So that they can enjoy a fresh melon on the holiday, some Russians pour wax over an unblemished melon in the summer. The protective layer should be so thick that no air can get to the shell. In addition, care must be taken to ensure that the melon has no bruises or other blemishes and that the fruit is stored soft and cool.
  • If you want to store a sliced melon, make sure that the knife is clean and as sterile as possible. Otherwise the germs can multiply on the melon and the fruit will spoil faster.
  • If you want to store watermelons for a long time, it is possible to pickle them. Depending on what seasonings you use, pickled watermelons go well with almost any dish. Just make sure you remove all cores when inserting.
