High concentrations of nitrates are harmful to humans, as they can lead to poisoning. The last month of summer, August is rightfully considered the season of watermelons, but many of them can be dangerous to our health.
Agronomist Volodymyr Vikulov told us how to find out if a watermelon is dangerous and how much nitrates it contains.
“Mineral fertilizers are usually used during the watermelon ripening period, they are necessary for plant nutrition. Perfectly ripe fruit does not contain nitrates. When tested, these substances are most often found in the first watermelons. But even in August, the consumer is not immune to the fact that a dangerous delicacy will be on his plate,” the expert says.
A high concentration of nitrates is harmful to humans, as it can lead to poisoning. “Watermelons must be checked, there must be a certification of their quality. However, the document on the absence of nitrates in watermelon is often issued on the principle of “paper can handle anything”. Much depends on the buyer. You need to be able to choose watermelons,” said the agronomist.
According to him, a quality watermelon has a smooth surface. A bumpy rind should alert the buyer, as it is one of the signs of high nitrate concentration.
“The bumpiness of the watermelon indicates that it has a well-developed rind, and it will be much thicker than usual when cut. Such a crust indicates a high nitrate content,” the agronomist warned.
