tasty herring variation

Peel the potatoes, halve them, and cut them into 1/2 cm wide slices. Pat the herring fillets dry and also cut them into 1/2 cm wide strips. Mix both ingredients in a bowl and divide them between two buttered casserole dishes. For the sauce, make a roux from the butter and flour, add the cream and water, stir in the ham cubes, and season with pepper. Spread the sauce over the potato and herring mixture, sprinkle with grated cheese, and arrange the butter flakes on top. Bake the dish in the oven or grill at 200°C (top/bottom heat) for about 30 minutes, until the surface is browned. Sprinkle the herring potatoes with the chives.
