St. Patrick's Day – Cake with Guinness

Spread the love

Ingredients for 1 servings:

  • 200 g margarine
  • 400 g sugar
  • 500 g flour
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 small bottle(s) of butter-vanilla flavoring
  • 1 bottle of beer (Guinness), 0.33 l
  • 200 g hazelnuts, chopped
  • powdered sugar
  • Food coloring, green

Instructions

Working time approx. 15 minutes; Total time approx. 15 minutes

Combine the first 8 ingredients in a large mixing bowl and mix to form a smooth batter. Preheat the oven to 170°C. Pour the batter into a large, well-greased springform pan and bake on the middle rack for approximately 65 minutes. Then, test for doneness with a wooden skewer and add 5 to 10 minutes if necessary. After baking, let the cake cool for a few minutes, but not too long, then remove it from the pan and place it on a cake plate. Mix a vibrant green glaze from powdered sugar, a little water, and plenty of green food coloring and cover the cake with it. Then let it cool completely. If you like, you can decorate the cake with green clover leaves made from sugar or marzipan. Hardcore fans also color the batter green with food coloring, but I find this a bit impractical, as the Guinness already makes the cake a bit darker than traditional sponge cakes. I lined the bottom of the springform pan with baking paper, which makes the cake easier to remove. I roasted the hazelnuts in the oven before baking, then wrapped them in a kitchen towel and chopped them myself by pounding them with a meat mallet. This way, I get a lot of larger pieces, so I can control the proportions myself, and the flavor is better with roasted hazelnuts.
