Storing potatoes – this is how it works
Potatoes are often stored incorrectly. They then end up in the garbage because germs have grown and bruises have developed. Prevent this by following these tips:
- Ideally, potatoes should be stored in a cool, dry, dark, and airy place. A darkened room prevents the potatoes from germinating, and darkness and coolness increase their shelf life.
- A basement room is best suited for this. Make some space and get a potato crate or breathable bag.
- Turn your potatoes around once a week. This way you will find rotten spots and the potatoes will be loosened again.
Potatoes – errors in the storage
You should avoid these mistakes:
- Do not store potatoes in a warm living room. Otherwise, germs will sprout and the toxic solanine will be formed.
- You should also make sure that you do not store potatoes too cold (below 4 degrees). Then the starch turns into sugar.
- If you store the potatoes on the ground, you prevent the air from circulating.
- Do not pack other foods with the potatoes, which release ethylene. These are apples, pears, plums, and other foods. Ethylene is a plant growth substance that accelerates the ripening process.
