Storing Sourdough: How to Store it Properly

Before you can bake bread, you need to properly store your sourdough. The starter material must last for several weeks so that you can feed it and multiply it.

This is how you keep the starter for your sourdough

The sourdough needs to keep for a while before you can feed it. The best way to do this is to put it in a mason jar.

  • Keep the sourdough starter in a sealed jam jar in the refrigerator at around 4 degrees Celsius.
  • The sourdough will keep for 7 to 10 days. You can then feed it and keep it in the fridge again for over a week or use it for baking.
  • Since the jar must be sealed, you cannot store the sourdough in the Roman pot which you can later bake into bread.

Make sourdough last longer

There are also ways to keep the sourdough for a longer period of time without having to feed it in between. You can do this by drying it.

  1. Spread the sourdough thinly on a sheet of parchment paper and wait for it to dry.
  2. After a few hours, you can crumble it in the baking paper.
  3. Pour the powder into a jar, seal tightly and store in a dark place at room temperature.
  4. The sourdough will keep for several months. If you want to use it, put some water in the glass and let it stand for 4 hours. You can then use it as usual.
