We all love the sweet taste of sugar – but most would probably prefer sugar without the calories. We have therefore compiled a list of alternatives to sugar for you in this article.
Alternative sweeteners – sugar without calories
Sugar without calories is a dream for many of us.
- White gold, as sugar is also called, is the most popular sweetener when producing and enjoying food. It provides sweetness and also gives baked goods the desired consistency.
- Sugar preserves jam and gives the creme brûlée a nice, crunchy crust. This diversity is difficult to achieve with alternative sweeteners.
- Natural sweeteners such as honey or agave syrup are considered a healthy alternative to sugar. However, these can only be enjoyed in moderation due to the high number of calories.
- Although stevia is low in calories as a sugar substitute, it is more difficult to dose because it is many times sweeter. In addition, many do not like the slightly bitter aftertaste.
- Sweeteners are also low in calories. But not everyone can tolerate it: sweeteners can lead to belching or bloating after eating.
Allulose: low in calories and grainy
The sweetener of the future could be allulose. The sugar substitute comes without calories but has the same consistency.
- A Rhenish company produces a low-calorie sugar substitute called allulose from sugar beet. It has been available in Japan since 2010. Now it will soon be available on the German market through the company Savanna Ingredients.
- In granular form, allulose has the same good properties in food preparation as sugar. However, its calories cannot be utilized by the body. Thus, allulose does not build up and can also be consumed in larger quantities.
- The sugar substitute occurs naturally in figs and raisins and is therefore nothing new on the food market. Allulose is to be cultivated in such a way that it is only slightly more expensive than conventional sugar.
- The sweetener, which is to be used not only in food but also in drinks, should also remain free of genetic manipulation.
