typical GDR ice cream sundae

I know this typical GDR recipe as the “Swedish Cup.” In the eastern part of Germany, it’s still served in ice cream parlors today. The ingredients are simple and inexpensive, perhaps because of its popularity. It’s particularly useful for spontaneous visits, as you can store the ingredients at home and often have them on hand. The recipe is incredibly simple: Divide applesauce between bowls. Top with vanilla ice cream—about three small scoops per bowl. Top with a dash of eggnog. If you like, you can top with fresh whipped cream. The quantities are for four generous servings. These instructions and the ratios are subject to variation and will vary according to individual taste. Good ingredients (not the cheapest of the bunch) greatly enhance the quality of the ice cream cup. It’s especially delicious with homemade applesauce.
