At the Christmas market, used mugs of mulled wine often end up in the pockets of visitors. But in this article, we will tell you whether you are allowed to take the cups with you at all.

Take a mug of mulled wine with you – is that allowed?

  • If you buy a mulled wine or other hot drink at the Christmas market, you always have to pay a deposit for the cup. Depending on the Christmas market, the deposit fee is between 2 and 3 euros.
  • The deposit only ensures that the visitors get an incentive to bring the cups back. However, the cup does not become your property as a result of the deposit. From a purely legal point of view, you are committing a criminal offense by taking a mug of mulled wine with you.
  • However, taking the cups with you is also desired at almost all Christmas markets. Individual motifs and the respective year are often printed on the mugs. For the next year, the operators will buy new mulled wine cups again. If you take a cup with you, the operators got rid of the cups for a small price.
