According to the nutritionist, oatmeal can irritate the intestines. Nutritionist Roxane Eskhani told us who should refrain from eating oatmeal and what health problems may arise.
According to the doctor, oatmeal is harmful to those who have stomach problems, especially to those with intestinal irritability. This is due to the high fiber content in the product. For example, one cup of oatmeal contains just over 8 grams of fiber.
“If you have a sensitive stomach, the fibers in oatmeal can lead to bloating and gas,” says the nutritionist. Instead of oatmeal, the nutritionist notes, it is better to choose cereals with lower fiber content.
“If a person avoids oatmeal because of its high fiber content, choose wheat groats, or white rice, which have less fiber,” the expert advises. If you have celiac disease (gluten intolerance), look for gluten-free oats.
“If you eat oatmeal and add sweeteners-sugar, brown sugar, honey, syrups-you increase the number of total calories and carbohydrates. People with pre-diabetes and diabetes may need to be careful, as this can cause their blood sugar levels to rise too high,” the expert said.
It is better to refuse ready-made cereals in bags in order to control what ingredients are added.
“Be careful with flavored oatmeal packets (pre-packaged or sweetened instant oatmeal)… It’s better to buy plain oatmeal and add your own nutritious toppings to it, such as fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, cardamom, and so on,” says the nutritionist.
