The tastiest and fastest red cabbage in the world

Spread the love

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 jar red cabbage
  • 50 g bacon, cut into cubes
  • 1 large onion(s), diced
  • 1 small apple, cut into cubes
  • 1 small potato(s), coarsely grated
  • 150 ml water
  • 1 tbsp plum jam or currant jam
  • 2 bay leaves
  • salt and pepper
  • Clove powder
  • ½ lemon(s), the juice
  • Fat, for frying

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 25 minutes; Total time approx. 35 minutes

Fry the bacon cubes until slightly crispy, add the onion and apple cubes, and sauté in the bacon until lightly browned. Add the red cabbage from the jar and a little water (about 150 ml), season with cloves, pepper, bay leaves, and salt. Heat the red cabbage and sauté for about 10 minutes over medium heat (stirring constantly to prevent burning). Stir in the plum jam and grated potato, and sauté for another 5-10 minutes over low heat. When the red cabbage is done, add the lemon juice to give it a nice color. Tip: It tastes even better reheated! That’s why I always make double the amount and freeze the leftovers in portions. This saves time for the next preparation and is also practical for single households.
