when there is no time at all…great snack
Spread the butter evenly on both (!) sides of the slices of toast, sprinkle a little salt on each side, and turn them down. On two of these slices, add some grated cheese, four slices of salami (just enough to cover the slice), and then a little more cheese. Place an empty slice of bread on top, press down firmly, and sprinkle with a little salt. Place cheese and half of the ham on two of the remaining slices, then cover with the last two slices. Then, one at a time, place them in the waffle iron, press down firmly, and bake until the outside is brown and crispy. If you have a well-coated iron, you can also add cheese to the outside of the bread, but be careful; I’ve had it stick to old irons—the two slices of bread should really stick together. Add a little tomato paste and oregano for a pizza-like flavor. Or you can put Gorgonzola on the inside, but only a little to prevent it from seeping out, for a nice, intense flavor. There are no limits to your imagination, only the waffle iron imposes a height limitation. However, this can be overcome by using a contact grill.
