Traveling gluten-free may seem daunting at first glance, but it is quite possible if you follow a few tips. We explain how to prepare for gluten-free travel and what you should consider on the trip itself.
This is how you can prepare for gluten-free travel
With a few preparations, such as choosing the travel destination or the right provisions, you can make gluten-free travel much easier.
- When choosing a travel destination and accommodation, you can pay attention to choosing a travel country where many gluten-free foods are available to you. Scandinavia, the USA or Italy are suitable for this.
- When choosing accommodation, holiday home or an apartment is a good choice instead of a hotel. This way you can provide yourself with groceries and take enough supplies with you and therefore make sure that no gluten is contained in your food.
- You can also learn some vocabulary in the language of your destination in advance so that you can express words such as “celiac disease” or “gluten-free food”.
- Creating a list of restaurants that offer gluten-free food at your travel destination can also save some effort on the spot.
- If you are planning to travel by plane, make sure to order the allergy-free version of the food in advance and have a few snacks of your own in your hand luggage to be on the safe side.
You should keep this in mind during the trip
Since even small amounts are enough to trigger unpleasant symptoms in the case of gluten intolerance, you should pay close attention to this and, if in doubt, make sure you know which foods you can eat in restaurants, for example.
- Don’t be afraid to ask the restaurant several times whether the dish you’ve ordered is actually gluten-free. A foreign language should not unsettle you.
- In restaurants or at buffets, also pay attention to how other guests handle the food and whether the cutlery for the gluten-free dishes was not previously in foods containing gluten.
- If you’re concerned about the gluten-free nature of the food, go back and get yourself something that you believe is gluten-free.
- Traveling gluten-free also means making spontaneous changes to your meal plans.
