  • 210 g flour
  • 140 g butter
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 egg(s)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 100 g white bread
  • 500 g caramel syrup
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

Working time approx. 20 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 50 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour 10 minutes

A typical English treacle tart, Harry Potter’s favorite. Makes 16 slices.

To make the pastry, first add the butter in small pieces to the flour and roughly mix the two together with your hands. Then add the salt, water, and egg and knead into a smooth dough. Form the dough into a ball and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, prepare the filling: crumble the white bread, mix it with the syrup, and stir in the lemon juice. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface and cut out a circle the size of the tart tin. Place the rolled out pastry into the greased tin, pressing down on the sides and trimming off any excess. Now add the filling to the tin. Roll out the leftover pastry again, cut into strips, and place a wire rack on top of the tart. Bake the treacle tart in an oven preheated to 180°C for about 50 minutes. Treacle tart, or treacle tart in the original, is more of a dessert than a traditional cake and can be served hot or cold. Harry Potter has a weakness for this dessert! This recipe is best suited for a tart pan with a diameter of 18 to 22 cm, as otherwise the filling will be a bit too small. If you only have a larger pan, you can increase the amount of filling.
