The term meatball describes small portions of minced meat and other ingredients that are fried for cooking. For the minced meat, the meat of beef, pork, or lamb is usually processed. Other ingredients in the preparation of meatballs often include egg and soaked bread or buns for binding, and various seasonings. Internationally, there are many numerous variants of the meatball, such as the Greek bifteki or the Spanish albondigas. In addition to some similarities, there are also many differences in the preparation and taste.
- Ćevapčići are internationally well-known. These are minced meat rolls that originally came from Southeast Europe. Especially in the Balkan region, Ćevapčići is very popular and widespread. They are traditionally made from pure ground beef, but there are also recipes with pork or lamb. By adding pepper and paprika powder, this variant of the meatball tastes very spicy. Sometimes savory and fenugreek are also used. Ćevapčići are grilled or fried and then served in flatbread or with a side salad. Ajvar paste is often combined with it.
- Köttbullar are a Swedish form of meatballs. They are round meatballs that are pan fried. For the preparation, the minced meat is mixed with egg and mixed with onions, and breadcrumbs, which are previously soaked in milk or cream. In addition to salt and pepper, typical spices are allspice or ginger. Köttbullar are usually served with cream sauce and potatoes. Lingonberry compote is also a popular side dish. In addition to beef or pork, elk or reindeer meat is sometimes used for preparation in Scandinavia.
- Kofte are an oriental variant of the meatball. They are now known in various countries, in addition to Turkey, for example, in India and parts of North Africa. Several hundred variations of the dish are known in Turkish cuisine alone. The dish is served in a variety of ways – for example in combination with a salad or with a spicy tomato sauce. Bulgur is often used instead of breadcrumbs. The minced meat usually comes from beef or lamb. Kofte tastes quite piquant and aromatic because of the numerous spices. In addition to salt and pepper, a ready-made spice mixture is often used, which contains, for example, paprika powder, oregano, garlic, turmeric, and parsley. Especially in Turkey, a vegetarian version of the köfte made from bulgur and potatoes is very common.
