Types of Onions – The Different Types Are Suitable For This

These types of onions exist

The prototype of the onion is the onion, which can be found in almost every household and is eaten very frequently. Stuttgarter Riesen and Zittauer are two well-known onion varieties. There are many other types of onions as well.

  • Onions are also called kitchen onions. They have a brown-yellow shell and are slightly smaller than a tennis ball. They are characterized by a medium sharpness. Due to the essential oil allicin, many people have to cry when cutting the onion. They are suitable for most dishes with onions and can, for example, be diced and sautéed or steamed until translucent. You can also eat the onion raw, for example on a sausage sandwich or a kebab.
  • Red onions are mainly known for burgers, soups, sauces, or salads. What is special about it is its slightly spicy and slightly sweet taste. You can recognize the onions from the outside by their reddish-purple skin and their size, which is similar to that of table onions.
  • White onions are mainly consumed in southern Europe. In contrast to the onion, they have white skin. They are slightly milder in taste and can therefore be eaten raw or stuffed.
  • Vegetable onions are considerably larger and heavier than table onions. Since they are mainly grown in Spain, you can also find them in supermarkets under the name Spanish onions. Their taste is not quite as sharp as that of the kitchen onion, but even slightly sweet. You can use them for salads as well as for grilling, stewing, or stuffing with minced meat or the like.
  • Shallots are about the size of a ping-pong ball and have reddish skin. Since they are very mild, they are suitable as an alternative to onions. They are often used to flavor hot dishes.
  • Spring onions or spring onions are reminiscent of leeks in appearance. They are mild and spicy and are therefore particularly suitable for processing in the raw state, for example in salads, spreads, or as a topping for soups and the like. They are particularly popular with Asian dishes.
  • Bunch or aerial onions are rather unknown to us. Unlike other types of onions, they do not grow underground, but on top of the shoots. The onions themselves are not particularly large, but you can use the green shoots as well. Due to their spicy taste, they are particularly suitable for salads or spreads.
  • Pearl onions and silver onions look very similar to each other. Both are very small and have white-silver skin. In contrast to the silver onion, the pearl onion still has a thick skin that surrounds it. Both types are usually pickled with cucumbers and other vegetables, but they can also be used in sauces or as an accompaniment to meat.
